Education

-        Master Degree in Electronic Engineering received on 11/12/1987 summa cum Laude from University of Rome "La Sapienza", with a final project on robotics entitled: “Hybrid Control of Position and Force” (advisor Prof. Fernando Nicolò).

-        PhD in Systems Engineering (IV Cycle) received on 11/07/1992 from University of Rome "La Sapienza" with a thesis entitled: “Models of Robot-Environment Interaction and Hybrid Control of Position and Force” (advisor Prof. Fernando Nicolò).

-        Received the license to practice the profession of Engineer on 1988.

 

Current position

-        From 01/09/2002 he is Associate Professor (SSD Ing-Inf/04 – Automatica) at University of L’Aquila, starting with the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, and then with the Department of Information Engineering and Science, and Mathematics.

 

Previous positions

-        From 08/04/1988 to 07/06/1989 he was lieutenant of the Corps of Technicians of the Italian Army at the “Army School of Technicians in Electronics” (STELE) in Rome with the position of Instructor of Electronic Equipment.;

-        From 09/03/1992 to 21/06/1995 he held a technician position (VII level – graduate technician) at the Department of Electrical Engineering of University of L'Aquila.

-        From 22/06/1995 to 31/08/2002 he has been Assistant Professor (in cluster K04X – Automatica) the Department of Electrical Engineering of University of L'Aquila.

-        from 1992 to 1995, as a technician he pursued educational activity supporting the courses of “Systems Theory”, “Identification Theory” and “Technologies of Control Systems” in the Master Degree programs in Electronic and Electric Engineering (assistance in trainings, exams, projects)

-        from July 1988 to July 1989, as a Reserve Officier he was "training officer of Electronic Equipments'' at the School of Army Electronic Technicians ("Scuola Tecnici Elettronici dell'Esercito" - STELE) of Rome, and he tought to officiers and seargents  technical students in eelectronics of the army the following classes: Electrotechnics, Electronics I and II, Servomechanisms, Digital Systems, Optical and Infrared equipments.

Activities and services for the University

-        In 1994 he supervised the creation of the Laboratory of Automatics and Robotics (LabAuRo) of the Department of Electrical of the University of L’Aquila, now transferred in the Department of Information Engineering an Science, and Mathematics. Since then, he has been the manager and supervisor of the laboratory.

-        In the period 1996-1998 he took part to an European TEMPUS-TACIS educational project for the reorganization of the Electronic Engineering programs at the “Kazakh National Technical University” (KNTU) in Almaty (Kazakhstan). Within this project he looked after the creation of a Computer Lab and of a Robotic Lab at KNTU of Almaty.

-        PhD: from year 2000 (XVI Cycle) to 2011 (XXVII Cycle) he has been member of Advisory Board of the Ph.D. School in Electrical and Information Engineering, and until 2008 he served as secretary. From 2012 (XXVIII Cycle) to 2013 (XXIX Cycle) and then from 2015 (XXXI Cycle) until today has been member of the Advisory Board of the Ph.D. School in Information and Communication Technology.

-        In 2000 he has been member of the Committee for the admission to the XV Cycle of the PhD program in Electrical and Information Engineering.

-        In 2015 he has been member of the Committee for the admission to the XXXI Cycle of the PhD program in Information and Communication Technology.

-        From May 2003 to all 2004 he has been elected member of the Technical-Scientific Committee of the Interdepartmental Center of Sport Science, as a representative of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

-        In 2007 he has been member of the Organizing Committee of the 2nd level Master in Optimization Methods and Data Mining, held in the AY 2007/08 (in cooperation with IASI-CNR)

-        Since 1998 he has been member of many Education Boards of Bachelor and Master programs (Electronic, Telecommunication, Mathematic, Computer and Control Systems, Information Engineering).

-        From October 2012 to October 2018 has been President of the “Consiglio di Area Didattica” (CAD) of the Master Program in Computer and Control Systems Engineering: elected on October 2012 for the first three academic years (2012/13-2014/15), and afterwards he has been re-elected on October 2015 for the following three academic years (2015/16-2017/18).

-        As the CAD President, since 2012 he has been also the President of most of the Degree Committees of the Master Program in in Computer and Control Systems Engineering (about 15 out of the 24 graduation days from 2012 to today), except for those held jointly with other Degree Programs in the field of Information Engineering, where the charge of President has been alternated.

-        Since October 2012 he has been member of the “commissione pratiche studenti” of the Master Program in in Computer and Control Systems Engineering.

-        As the President of the CAD of the Master Program in in Computer and Control Systems Engineering he has been appointed member of the “Commissione Paritetica Docenti-Studenti” of the Department DISIM for the three AYs 2012/13-2014/15.

-        In December 2012 he has been appointed member of the “Commissione Didattica di Dipartimento” for the Department DISIM, for the three AYs 2012/13-2014/15.

-        Since February 2013 he has been member of the “Gruppo di Riesame ed Assicurazione Qualità” of the Master Program in in Computer and Control Systems Engineering, devoted to the preparation of evaluation and monitoring reports of the Master Program.

-        Since 2013 he is the representative of the head of the Department DISIM at the meetings of COPI (Conferenza Per l’Ingegneria)

-        In September 2018 is again appointed as a member of the “Commissione Paritetica Docenti Studenti” of the Department DISIM.

-        In the years 2003-2005 he has been the local scientific manager of the research unit of the University of L’Aquila of the MIUR National Project entitled “Innovative bio-inspired strategies for the control of motion systems”, (MIUR grant PRIN 2003). The main topics of the scientific activity of Costanzo Manes are:

-   Robotics: modelling of robot-environment interaction in the execution of tasks that involve non-negligible exchange of forces. Definition of methodologies of simultaneous robot position and exerted force. Localization problems of mobile robots.

-   State estimation in nonlinear dynamic systems in deterministic and stochastic frameworks (state observers and filters); application of polynomial estimation techniques for filtering of nonlinear systems; simultaneous state and parameters estimation; state estimation by means of Carleman approximation of nonlinear systems, both in continuous and discrete time, both in deterministic and stochastic conditions. Application to sensorless control of electrical motors.

-   Analysis, estimation and control of delay systems: LQG control for stochastic linear systems with state delays, finite-dimensional approximation of the optimal controller, control with exact linearization for nonlinear delay systems, state observers for systems with delays in the state and in the measurements, control of systems with delayed measurements; cascade observers. Control via output feedback based on state observers for delay systems. Stabilization in the presence of delayed measurements. Identification of linear feedback systems with delay in the feedback.

-   State estimation of descriptor systems (singular), of unknown input systems, of hybrid systems with Markov switching;

-   Deterministic and stochastic modelling and control of fisiological/biological systems. Control of glycemia by means of a state observer. Models of cell dynamics, in particular of  temporization mechanisms within the cell.

-   Stochastic bisimulations: definitions and stochastic bisimilarity conditions both in discrete and continuous time. Reduction procedures of systems by means of bisimilarity.

-   Methods of Internal Positive Realization (IPR) of state-space systems and transfer matrices. Use of  IPR for interval observers design and for the stability analysis of classes of linear delay systems (differential systems, difference continuous time systems, differential-difference systems).
